Are there any Brightspace quick start guides available for faculty and students?

Yes. Download the Faculty Quick Start Guide or the Student Quick Start Guide to get started.

Will I have courses in both Sakai and Brightspace?

Possibly. The School of Communication (SOC) and the School of Continuing & Professional Studies (SCPS) have been selected as Brightspace early adopters for Fall 2026. As a result, instructors and students who are enrolled in courses across multiple schools—including SOC or SCPS and schools that continue to use Sakai—may need to access both platforms during the transition period.

When will Sakai no longer be accessible to users?

A limited number of Spring 2027 courses will continue to be taught in Sakai. In addition, non-credit project sites may remain active in Sakai through May 2027. The deadline to review and download old content from Sakai is May 31, 2027.

Will I have to build courses from scratch?

No. Building your courses from scratch is optional. Completed courses for early adopter instructors have already been migrated from Sakai to Brightspace. All other instructors can now access completed courses from Spring 2026 [1262] and Summer 2026 [1264] by completing the . Current courses in Fall 2026 [1266] will be migrated in early 2027.

As with Sakai, Brightspace allows you to copy content from a previous course into a new course site. However, you should plan to review your migrated content carefully, including formatting, organization, links, and activities, and make any necessary adjustments before teaching your course.

How do I access a sandbox course?

Instructors must first log in to to create and activate their account before requesting a sandbox course. Once they have successfully logged in, they may request a Brightspace sandbox course (limit one) by submitting a . Please allow 24-48 hours for processing. [Fall 2026 courses only] What is the accessibility report in Brightspace, and can students access it?

An accessibility report has been added to Fall 2026 early adopter courses only. This report is for informational purposes and is designed to help instructors identify potential accessibility issues.

To access this report:

  • In Brightspace, select More Tools from the course navigation bar, then choose Manage Files.
  • Open the folder named _accessibilityReports.
  • Download and open the HTML report.

Students cannot access the Manage Files tool in Brightspace. Therefore, the report remains hidden unless a link is created to it using the Content tool. Please do not delete this report. For additional information, including support and training, visit Accessibility Guidelines.

Will I still have access to the integrations I used in Sakai (e.g., Zoom, Panopto, VoiceThread, Turnitin)?

Yes. Instructors using Brightspace in Fall 2026 can now access Zoom, Panopto, VoiceThread, and other integrated tools. We’re also excited to announce that Turnitin is now available in Brightspace. You can review the following instructions to get started.

What is D2L Lumi Pro?

D2L Lumi Pro is the AI-powered content creation tool available within Brightspace. Instructors can use Lumi Pro to generate course materials such as quiz questions, discussion prompts, lesson content, summaries, and other instructional resources.

Please note:

  • Lumi Pro is only available to instructors and cannot be used by students.
  • Instructors should review all AI-generated content before sharing it with students to ensure it is accurate, appropriate, and aligned with course learning objectives.
  • Lumi Pro is intended to support instructor expertise, not replace it.

What will happen with Sakai project (or non-credit) sites?

Academic and administrative units and individuals who currently use Sakai project sites may continue to do so throughout the 2026-27 academic year. After June 2027, the future of these sites will depend on how they are being used. Project sites without defined start and end dates, such as those primarily used to store or share resources may be better suited for migration to Microsoft SharePoint. Project sites that function more like traditional courses may transition to Brightspace, while remaining separate from academic course sites to address security and access considerations. Microsoft 365 is also expected to integrate with Brightspace and provide additional options for guest access. More information and guidance will be available in early 2027.

Can I access Brightspace with a mobile app?

Yes, Brightspace has a mobile app called . Please note that this app is designed primarily to support the student experience.
